Health Advisory Lifted for Horton's Mission Lake
10/10/2013

(KNZA)--The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says a public health advisory has been lifted for Horton’s Mission Lake.

The advisory had been issued in early September due to the presence of harmful blue-green algae.  But KDHE said Thursday that the advisory has  been lifted as a result of this week’s water sampling.

Meanwhile, two other area lakes—the Hiawatha City Lake and Atchison’s Warnock Lake—continue under a  public health warning due to high levels of toxic blue-green algae.

The department says a warning means conditions are unsafe, and direct contact with the water is prohibited.

When animals are exposed to toxic algae they may experience vomiting, diarrhea or even death. Humans can also experience symptoms including rashes, running noses and eye infections.
