(AP)--A member of the Kansas State Board of Education is receiving some heat for promoting a private business at a meeting.

The Topeka Capital-Journal (http://is.gd/WRY3tf) reports that board member Steve Roberts refers to himself as "Mr. X, Mentor of Mathematics." Earlier this month, he distributed cards to dozens of high school guests from Topeka.

These cards direct students to a math instructional website program that charges a $15 a month fee for services. The site says that Kansas residents can access tutorials for free, a fact which is not present on the cards.

Several board members, including chairwoman Jana Shaver have objected to Roberts handing out the cards, saying that a board meeting is not the proper place for him to promote the services provided by “Mr. X”.

Roberts says that handing out the cards was a spur of the moment decision.
