Preparing For Winter Weather Now Can Save You Later
11/18/2013

(KAIR)--Weather in Kansas can change without warning, and it is always a good idea to be prepared for anything Mother Nature can throw at you. Wednesday is Winter Weather Awareness day, a day that has been set aside to start thinking about preparing yourself and your family for the upcoming winter weather. Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Topeka Chad Omitt says that while most people think of tornadoes causing the most damage in the state, it is really when people are driving in ice and snow that is the most dangerous.

Omitt provides some simple safety tips for driving on icy roads, including just slowing down and putting down the mobile device to concentrate more on the road. He says that we cannot go as fast as we usually do on roads, and it is best to take conditions into consideration when you are driving.

He also advises to keep a safety kit including blankets, clothes, non perishable foods, water, and a flashlight with batteries in your vehicle just in case you find yourself stranded in severe winter conditions. It is also important to know the weather conditions of not only the area you are coming from, but of your destination as well.

Omitt further states that there is no clear signal out there right now that is giving meteorologists any idea of what kind of winter it will be, so the best advice he can give is to be be prepared for just about anything.
