City of Hiawatha Cautions Residents About Recent Mailings
12/10/2013

(KNZA)--The City of Hiawatha is cautioning residents to read before you sign anything.

In recent months, homeowners throughout Kansas, including the Hiawatha area, have received a letter in the mail from HomeServe USA encouraging them to buy a utility service line plan that would help cover costs of any repairs.

Several residents have brought the letter to the Hiawatha City Hall when paying their water bills to express their concerns. Hiawatha city officials say HomeServe isn’t sponsored or supported by the city, and there are no requirements that homeowners have utility line insurance. However, the city says its true that homeowners are responsible for utility lines from the meter to their house.

City officials say residents considering buying such insurance should remain wary and also check with their insurer to find out whether such coverage already exists under the homeowner’s current policy. The city urges residents to read the fine print, in some policies it states that damage done to utility lines during acts of God are not covered.
