(KAIR)--An early morning fire causes significant damage to an Atchison home.
Fire crews were called to a residence located at 929 North 7th Street shortly after 6 Thursday morning. Atchison Fire Chief Mike McDermed says that when crews arrived on scene, there was visible smoke and flames coming from a room on the first floor of the home. Crews were able to extinguish the flames fairly quickly, as well as a smaller fire in an upstairs bathroom.
There were two occupants in the home at the time the fire started, but both were able to escape without injury.
McDermed also says they have an idea on how the fire started. The department investigator has so far determined that a flu on the pellet burning stove used to heat the home caused some surrounding material to ignite.
