(KTNC) -- The Pawnee City Council has rejected a resident’s request to burn a large brush pile.
Lee and Janis Rogge had asked the City Council for permission to conduct a controlled burn at property they own on 5th Street. Fire Chief John Vetrovsky had previously denied the request for a burn permit over concerns about the smoke that would cause in the residential neighborhood. Vetrovsky also cited the city’s ordinance regulating fire rings in denying the request.
The Rogges asked the City Council to override the Fire Chief’s decision. In a letter to the Mayor and City Council, they said they would have a backhoe to feed a small fire from the large brush pile. If the smoke turned towards town, they said they’d stop burning and wait for another day.
The property is the former Sebek property, which the Rogges purchased from the city at an auction last spring.
Their letter says they’ve received compliments for the work they’ve done to clean up the property so far, but that hauling the remaining brush from the property would be a financial burden.
The City Council turned down the request for a burn permit on Monday.
