(KLZA) -- According to the report from Auburn Fire Chief Randy Bennett a space heater in the garage of the home at 514, 26th Street in Auburn caused a fire that caused major damage to the home and garage.
The Auburn Volunteer Fire Department was called out at 5:27 a-m after Nemaha County Deputy Sheriff Steve Bures discovered the fire while on patrol in the area. Deputy Bures awoke the owners of the home, Jeff and Chris Harvry. Deputy Bures attempted to extinguish the fire with a small fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful.
Auburn firemen arrived on the scene just minutes after being paged. Three engines and 15 firemen responded including a truck from the Peru Fire Department.
The State Fire Marshall was unavailable. An investigation by the Auburn Fire Department determined the cause of the fire was a space heater in the garage that was there for heat for the family dog.
There were no injuries reported. Firemen remained on the scene until 9 a-m.
The Harvey's have two children, Hannah and Noah. The First Christian Church in Auburn is serving as a drop off point for those wishing to donate clothing to the family.
