(KAIR)--2013 was an eventful year for the city of Atchison, with numerous events taking place. City Manager Trey Cocking mentions the opening of the new Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge as one event in particular that everyone was excited about. The bridge is now completely operational, with the bridge lights going a long way to showcasing the city.
Looking ahead, Cocking says that he is really excited about the direction the city Public Works Department is going with new Director Justin Pregant leading the way. He says there is a lot of new and innovative things going on in the department, with the roll out of new trash receptacles as the highlight of the coming year. Each city resident will have a trash cart by the end of January.
Bridges and trash receptacles are not the only improvements the city has to look forward to in 2014. There will also be some much needed changes made to the city water plant, with a new stortage tank installed that will hold four times as much water as the current one. A new ozone system will also be implemented which will not only clean water, but will make it smell and taste better as well.
Cocking adds the city fire department is also looking forward to replacing the almost 35-year old ladder truck, and city officials are planning to complete a number of road improvements.
