(KAIR)--City employees in Atchison can be assured they will be taken care of in the unfortunate event they are injured on the job. City Commissioners approved the renewal of the city's workers compensation insurance, and authorized a premium payment in the amount of $148,213 during their meeting Monday evening. City Manager Trey Cocking says that trash collectors have the highest workers compensation rate in the city due to the dangers associated with their job. Only underwater welders have higher rates.
Cocking is confident the city will benefit in the long term as it moves toward a new method of trash collection. The new automated system will not only put workers in less danger, but will lower insurance premiums as well,
In other business, Public Works Director Justin Pregont informed the Commissioners that the city wide rollout of new trash carts has started, and should be completed in the next few weeks.
