(KAIR)--Tax season is in full swing, and with it, comes those who are looking to steal personal information in an attempt to gain access to your tax return.
The Kansas Attorney General's Office is warning Kansans to be careful about who they give personal information to, especially during tax filing season, with most tax identity theft scams involving someone filing a false tax return using someone else's Social Security Number. When the victim attempts to file a legitimate return, it will most likely be rejected because IRS records show that they have already filed.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of ID theft during tax season include disclosing your Social Security Number only when necessary, keeping personal information in a secure location, and protecting computer files.
Victims of identity theft can file a report online with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at www.InYourCornerKansas.org.
