Atchison Applies For Three KDOT Transportation Enhancement Grants
01/22/2014

(KAIR)--Atchison City officials are moving forward with three grant applications they hope will improve transportation options in the city. Three different Kansas Department of Transportation Enhancement grant applications were presented to the Atchison City Commission during their meeting Tuesday evening, including one City Finance Director Becky Anderson says has been submitted before. Last year, a grant application was submitted to put in a trail on River Road that extended down to the Missouri River levy. Anderson says it was a very big public outreach campaign, and there was a lot of support for it, but the grant was denied.

Anderson says they were told by KDOT their grant was denied mainly due to the fact there was no clear destination, and it was not a true alternative destination route. Though now, KDOT has changed the name of the program to the Transportation Alternatives Program, which has encouraged officials to try to submit again.

This grant is only one of three that will be submitted this year. The second application will be for a bike/pedestrian path from US 59 Highway to the hospital down US 73 Highway, and the third application concerns a streetscape on the 800 block of Commercial.

Commissioners approved the submission of all three grants with a 4-0 vote.
