Book About North Platte Canteen the 2014 One Book Nebraska Selection
01/24/2014

(KTNC) --  Nebraskans are being encouraged to read a story about the North Platte Canteen.  Governor Dave Heineman recently signed a proclamation naming the book “Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen” as the 2014 One Book Nebraska selection.
The story details how the town of North Platte came together during World War Two to provide welcoming words, friendship, and baskets of food and treats to more than six million soldiers by the time the war ended.
Bob Greene, an award-winning journalist and CNN contributor, wrote the book, as he says on the book’s first page, because he was looking for “the best America there ever was.”
Copies of “Once Upon a Town” are available at the Fall City Library. It can also be downloaded, free of charge, from Nebraska Overdrive at
www.fallscitylibrary.org.
Discussions about the book “Once Upon a Town” will be held at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on March 18th.
