Missing Atchison Man's Truck Found in Missouri River
01/26/2014

(KAIR)--Atchison authorities say a truck pulled from the Missouri River Sunday belongs to an Atchison man who has been missing since late December.

A body was found inside the truck after it was removed from the river Sunday evening.  Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says tests are being conducted to verify that the body is that of 69-year-old Garry Sandy.

Wilson says the truck was spotted just before 3 Sunday afternoon by a walker along the riverfront near downtown Atchison about twenty five feet from shore. The Atchison Police Department was contacted, and the area was soon blocked off.

Officials had to fight both high winds and strong river currents in their attempt to remove the 2005 Dodge Ram from the river.  An underwater recovery team from Lees Summit, Missouri and a tow company from Platte City assisted local authorities.

The vehicle was removed from the water shortly after 8:30 Sunday evening, and was towed to the police impound for closer examination.

Sandy's family was at the scene, and his niece Jamie Wykert made sure to thank everyone involved for working so hard to find her uncle over the past month, as well as the search team helping to remove the truck from the river.

Sandy has been missing since December 31st and a Silver Alert was issued for him on January 10th.
