Update: Benedictine College Responds to Lawsuit
02/18/2014

(MSC News)--A complaint is filed in United States District Court by a former Benedictine College Soccer player.

According to the campus newspaper, The Circuit, class of 2013 member Zach Robertson is seeking $75,000 dollars in damages for what he claims are injuries sustained during a practice drill in the fall of 2012.

According to the paper, the complaint claims negligence and wanton and reckless conduct by Benedictine, and names head soccer coach Rob Herringer and former wrestling coach Cy Wainwright.

The Circuit reports that Robertson alleges that members of the BC wrestling team were instructed to “slam” members of the soccer team as part of a mandatory drill to “toughen up” the players.

The college has issued a statement regarding the matter, saying: “Benedictine College is aware of the lawsuit recently filed by a former student athlete.  Obviously, we disagree on the facts as they have been reported.  Benedictine College is a small, Catholic school known for its family atmosphere and sense of community and we care deeply for the physical and spiritual well-being of our students.  Out of respect for the legal process and due to the nature of the suit, which could include personal student health information protected by federal Right to Privacy laws, we will not comment on the particulars of this case.”
