(KNZA)--A new health insurance plan has been approved for Hiawatha City employees, and the city will pick up 100 percent of the cost for the employee and their dependents.
The City Commission this week approved what’s call the “ gold plan” from Blue Cross and Blue Shield at a total cost to the city of $260,813.
A committee made up of Mayor Crosby Gernon, city department heads and City Administrator Mike Nichols met to review health insurance plans and recommended the city go with the “ gold plan” and pay for 100 percent of dependent coverage.
Currently, the city pays 80 percent of dependent coverage. Even with the city picking up 100 percent of the cost, the city will pay about $28,000 less than under the current plan.
The new policy will begin April 1st of this year and run through March 31st of next year.
