ACCHS Honors Former Educator
02/25/2014

(KAIR)--Jim Maendele has accomplished quite a bit during his decades of service to Atchison County Community High School, and Monday night, the spotlight was on him as the school recognized him for those accomplishments.

Maendele was presented with a plaque that will hang on the school's wall of fame in a ceremony that took place in between varsity basketball games. Maendele said that he feels very humble, and it's a great honor to be on the wall, because of the people that are already there.

He had nothing but praise for the numerous students and athletes he encountered during his tenure. He says they are no longer boys and girls like he used to call them, but young men and young ladies, and adds that he thinks that what they actually accomplished as teams, contributed to, along with their education, to the success they have today.

Dan Brenner, a graduate of ACCHS, who recommended Maendele for the honor, was also present for the ceremony, says that his professionalism and dedication to the school meant that it was finally time for his former coach and mentor to be recognized for all he has done. He had some great athletes come through the program, and he developed them to be the best they could be.

Maendele started his teaching career at ACCHS in 1970. He also coached at the school, leading the boys track team to nine, and the boys cross country team to three big seven league titles during his time as head coach.

He and his wife have been married for fifty-seven years, and have raised their family in the Effingham area.
