Falls City Council Approves Regional 911 Agreement
03/04/2014

(KTNC) -- The Falls City Council approved an agreement Monday night that would have the city join a southeast Nebraska regional 911 governing committee. The agreement is being formed as Falls City and the governing boards of other Public Service Answering Points in southeast Nebraska look for ways to lower the cost of transitioning to Next Generation 911 Service.
The interlocal agreement is between the governing boards of Public Service Answering Points of 14 counties in southeast Nebraska. Falls City is the P-SAP for Richardson County.
City Clerk Gary Jorn said representatives from the various counties have been discussing the agreement for the last year. He explained that the city’s current 911 equipment will need to be replaced in a couple years and the cost to replace it is steep, approximately a quarter-million dollars for one piece of equipment.
The agreement establishes a Regional Governing Committee comprised of one representative from each of the 14 Public Service Answering Points making up the Southeast 911 Region.
Jorn said the agreement is to form the committee and to hire a consultant, who will help determine what equipment is needed, what infrastructure is already in place, and the potential cost.
The agreement calls for the costs of the consultant to not exceed $50,000, with the costs divided based on the population of each participating county based on the 2010 Census.
The City of Lincoln would bear the lion’s share of the cost – approximately 65-percent, with Falls City responsible for about two-percent.
The agreement is for two years.
On a related move, the City Council appointed Police Chief Duane Armbruster to be the city’s representative on the Regional Governing Committee.
