(KNZA)--Several area students were among the top finishers in the 61st annual Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee held Saturday.
Forty-five students from 24 counties in northeast Kansas competed in the competition held at Seaman High School.
Marysville Elementary School 6th grader Ricky Hu, representing Marshall County, took second place.
Haylie Folsom, an 8th grader representing Atchison County from Atchison’s St. Benedict Catholic School came in 3rd.
Jeff West Middle School 7th grader Charlotte Straley, representing Jefferson County, captured 4th place; and Onaga Grade School 7th grader Dylan Brunkow, representing Pottawatomie County, tied for 10th place.
Ethan Perrins, an 8th grader from Southwest Middle School in Lawrence, took the title of champion. He will now compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. May 26th-31st.
