(KNZA)--An estimated $5.4 to $6.5 million in facility upgrades are recommended for the Hiawatha school district’s three school buildings.
Representatives of Lenexa-based P1 Group, which evaluated all three schools, discussed their findings Monday evening.
The bulk of the improvements are recommended at the elementary and high schools—including upgrades to the HVAC systems at both schools. The middle school is only 14-years-old so major repairs are not recommended. However, the board was informed now is the time to begin planning 5 to 10 years into the future with the facility.
Dustin Avery with Piper Jaffray discussed financing options, which would involve a bond initiative.
Superintendent Penny Hargrove says the board plans to hold a special meeting March 26th at 7 in the evening to talk about the district’s facilities and how they plan to proceed with the recommended improvements.
In a related matter, the board was told the high school was recently cited by OSHA for a safety violation involving the mop station being too close to the school’s electrical equipment.
