(KTNC) -- The Pawnee City Council is standing by its decision to deny a request to burn a large pile of debris in town.
Lee Rogge had asked the council last year for permission to burn the large piles at the former Sebek property at 1308 5th Street, after Fire Chief John Vetrovsky denied the request. The piles include trees and other building material.
The City Council reviewed a letter Monday night from attorney Allen Fankhauser, asking the council to reconsider its decision. After discussing the matter with Vetrovsky, the council decided to again deny Rogge’s request for a burn permit.
Vetrovsky also recently turned down a request from Steve Mercure to burn debris on property near the school.
In other business Monday, the Pawnee City Council approved a payment of just over $3,000 to the Southeast Nebraska Development District to administer the city’s housing rehab grant.
The city has received nine applications from homeowners seeking housing rehab grants. Three have been approved for funding, with bids ready to send to contractors.
Pawnee City has received a $350,000 grant to rehab up to 10 homes this year.
