(KTNC) -- Work has started on the addition to the Johnson-Brock School.
The contractor, Housman Construction, moved their trailer in Monday as they begin the construction process. Superintendent Jeff Koehler says they’ll start tearing out the floor in a bathroom and opening up the hallway and begin dirt work next week, with the goal to have much of the work complete this summer.
Koehler says the contractor plans to at least finish work on a bathroom and the commons area this summer. He says if work is not complete on a new science room and library, that wouldn't prevent them from starting school in the fall.
The addition will add much needed classroom space onto the Johnson-Brock School.
The Johnson-Brock School Board this week set the school calendar for the next year. The first day of class will be on August 19.
The only other action item this month, the board approved overnight stays for students who may advance to the State Speech competition in Kearney on March 27 and the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Omaha in April.
Koehler says they discussed steps the district may need to take to comply with provisions of the Affordable Care Act. That basically involves tracking the hours of district employees. How much the law impacts the district hinges on whether they have 50 employees.
The Johnson-Brock School District right now has slightly less than 50 employees. Whether they remain under that threshold, Koehler says, depends largely on the number of hours of seasonal employees and volunteer coaches.
