(KNZA)--A 12-year-old Hiawatha boy has been recognized for his heroic actions in connection with a vehicle fire in February.
Hiawatha Mayor Crosby Gernon presented a certificate of courage to Brandon Blanton during Monday evening’s City Commission meeting on behalf of the city and Hiawatha Fire Department. Blanton was also presented with a certificate of recognition from the Kansas State Firefighters Association.
Fire Chief Bill Roland said Brandon was in a vehicle behind a truck in the McDonald’s parking lot on February 21st when he noticed some sparks coming from under the vehicle and notified the truck's occupants what was going on. After returning to his vehicle, Roland said Brandon then noticed flames coming from under the back of the truck and made sure all the occupants got out safely.
Members of the Hiawatha Fire Department and Brandon parents, Marjorie and Zack Wren, were on hand for the presentation
