(KNZA)--Voters went to the polls Tuesday in several area cities.
In Hiawatha, voters said "no" to a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the construction of a new movie theater and for recreational and economic development purposes. The issue was defeated by a more than 140-vote margin. 446 residents cast "no" votes, compared to 303 " yes" votes.
Bill Collins and Dr. Steffen Shamburg ran unopposed in their bid for re-election to the Hiawatha City Commission.
In Horton, Bryan Stirton defeated incumbent Jeremy Forkenbrock for the position of Police Commissioner by a more than 90-vote margin, and if the vote stands, the city will also have a new Parks and Recreation Commissioner. The unofficial results Tuesday night had Lonnie Boller defeating incumbent Al Barton by a three-vote margin.
In Holton, Twila White defeated incumbent Hal Cochren in his bid for re-election to position 5 on the City Commission by a 12 vote-margin. Bob Dieckmann ran unopposed in his bid for re-election to position 1.
In Fairview, write-ins determined who will fill two council positions and the position of mayor as there were no candidates on the ballot . Mayor Joe Rettele won election to another term, receiving the only write-in votes cast. He has agreed to serve another term. The top two write-ins for the council positions were Margaret Wikle and incumbent Levi Gunn.
The results are unofficial until the ballots are canvassed by the county commission’s in the respective county’s on Monday.
