(KMZA)--A resurfacing and drainage improvement project on U.S. 36 Highway in Seneca could be scaled back after the low bid came in higher than estimated.
City Administrator Matt Rehder and two city council members met with Kansas Department of Transportation officials last week to discuss options.
Bids for the project were opened recently by KDOT, and the low bid was more than $160,000 higher than the engineer’s estimate.
Rehder says KDOT won’t commit any additional funding and extra costs will be the city’s responsibility. He says the city’s match is now at $495,000, which is well above the $265,000 to $275,000 they had budgeted for.
No decisions were made at the meeting.
Among the options being considered are to do the project in stages, or only improving the worst portion—from 6th to 11th Street.
The project, which will address longstanding drainage concerns along portions of the highway, had been expected to begin this month.
