(KLZA) -- Small schools face lots of questions about their future. Rock Port, Missouri School District patrons showed strong support for the future of their school earlier this month, approving two bond issues. One bond issue will pay for a new gymnasium, the other for a permanent 40-cent levy to support the school.
Craig Walker, who is finishing his second year as principal will be the Superintendent at Rock Port starting next year says he is thankful and excited about the outcome of the vote.
The bond issues that passed actually allow the tax levy for district property owners to go down on an annual basis from current levels. The $2.7 million for the gym will be added onto the current bonds being paid off. It will take an extra five years to pay the money off, but the bond levy will not increase.
Plans for the new gym are being developed now with construction hopefully to begin in October. Estimates are for it to be a 14-month build meaning it could open in January, 2016.
With seating for 1,000 people the gym will meet requirements to host post season volleyball, basketball and wrestling tournaments. Bringing more people to town is good for businesses in the community as well.Walker says Rock Port is a great school district and he looks forward to that being the case a long time into the future.
