(KNZA)--Former Kansas senator and one-time Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole made stops in Holton, Hiawatha and Troy Tuesday.
The 90-year-old Dole received a standing ovation upon his arrival at Hiawatha’s Fisher Center, and was welcomed by Mayor Crosby Gernon.
Dole said he was touring the state to thank those who supported him during his 30 years in Congress. Dole served in the U.S. House from 1961 to 1968 and the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1996. He holds the record for the longest serving Republican leader in the Senate, in the position of either majority leader or minority leader from 1985 through 1995.
Dole spent time answering questions, ranging from his thoughts on Russian aggression in Ukraine, the Affordable Care Act and partisanship in Washington.
Following the question and answer session, Dole took photographs with those in attendance.
Dole continued his Kansas tour Wednesday with stops in Atchison and Leavenworth.
He plans a second tour next month, which is to include stops in Seneca and Marysville.
