Tornado Victims To Be Protected From Scams

Former KS Atty General Derek Schmidt

(KAIR)--A consumer protection team from the Kansas Attorney General's office has been sent to Baxter Springs to assist residents recovering from Sunday's tornado.

According to a release from Attorney General Derek Schmidt, staff from the team will be on scene to ensure that victims of the storm are not further victimized by scam artists looking to take advantage of the disaster. The team will be on the lookout for storm chasing roof contractors  who are not properly registered with the attorney general's office, which is required by state law. The office is also advising residents to be wary of any door to door scams in the region.

Schmidt says that all too often, scam artists roll into an area hit by a disaster, trying to take advantage of consumers in a vulnerable situation. He adds that his office will continue to assist local law enforcement in making sure they are protected.
