(KNZA)--Two caravans of cars — one in Atchison, the other in Concordia — will head out Saturday morning and meet that afternoon in Frankfort for a celebration and car show.
The cars will be part of the Kansas White Way Car Run to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first organizational meeting on May 15, 1914, to create the Kansas White Way, now known as K-9 highway.
In May 1914, community leaders in Atchison and Concordia worked together to boost the establishment and marking of the Kansas White Way, a portion of a highway system linking Chicago and Denver that ran through the state.
The leaders believed the highway could increase business and tourism in communities along the route, as well as enable the improvement of local roads.
They agreed to drive their cars to a meeting in Frankfort to discuss the Kansas White Way and encouraged others to join them along the route.
Registration for the car run will be held at 7 Saturday morning in front of the Atchison County Historical Society Museum located at 200 South 10th Street. The car run will leave Atchison at 8 and head through Effingham, Muscotah, Whiting, Netawaka,Wetmore, Goff, Corning, Centralia,
Vermillion and then arrive at Frankfort City Park by 2 in the afternoon
Several attractions and food options will be available along Saturday’s
route.
