(KTNC) - The Omaha Public Power District is laying the groundwork to begin construction on a new high-voltage transmission line.
The Midwest Transmission Project is a joint effort of OPPD and Kansas City Power and Light. The new transmission line will run 180 miles from OPPD’s Nebraska City Station to a sub-station near Sibley, Missouri.
The route in southeast Nebraska runs along Highway 75 between Nebraska City and Auburn, then angles between Nemaha, Stella and Barada and west of Indian Cave State Park, crossing the Missouri River south of Corning.
OPPD is holding public meetings this week to discuss the project with landowners who will be affected by the project. About a dozen landowners attended a meeting Tuesday night at the Falls City Middle School.
Project manager Kent Herzog said the purpose of the line is to increase reliability, reduce congestion, and provide access to future renewable energy sources.
The new transmission line is scheduled to be in service in the summer of 2017.
Another public meeting is scheduled Thursday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the 4-H Building at the Nemaha County Fairgrounds in Auburn.
