(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved the appropriation of $20,000 to help with the upcoming 100th anniversary of the annual Halloween Frolic.
The Commission Monday evening approved the distribution of the funding from the city’s special events fund to the Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce for the October 31st event.
Chamber President Carrie Potter says the funding will allow them to afford some of the various activities they have been planning for this year’s frolic. She said one way they would like to use the money is by helping area high school marching bands defray the travel costs of coming to the parade.
Potter also appeared before the Commission to request that the city increase it’s annual allocation to the Chamber from $6,000 to $12,000 to help with expenses related to their events and programs.
Potter said the Chamber has received the same amount from the city for at least 10 years. She said the Convention and Visitors Bureau also currently provides funding to the Chamber and the Chamber is looking at restructuring their membership dues.
Mayor Crosby Gernon said the Commission will consider the request when working on the 2015 budget.
