(KNZA)--A motorcycle crash west of Mayetta has claimed the life of a Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation tribal leader.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says 56-year-old James Potter, of Delia, died in the crash Wednesday evening on K Road about a half mile north of 142nd Road after the motorcycle he was driving hit a deer, left the roadway and landed in a ditch.

The Patrol says someone driving by early Thursday saw Potter and the motorcycle and notified authorities.

Potter was currently tribal council secretary.  He served 16 years on the tribal council--12 years as treasurer and 4 years as secretary.  In addition, Potter served 8 years on the executive board of the National Congress of American Indians.

Drum services for Potter will be held Monday evening at the Danceground Building west of Mayetta.
