06/20/2014

(KNZA)--Unemployment was up in most area northeast Kansas counties in May, compared to April.

That’s according to a report released Friday by the state Department of Labor.

Atchison County had the highest unemployment rate among area counties at 5.8 percent while Nemaha County had the lowest at 2.9 percent.

Doniphan County was the only area county to see a drop in it’s jobless rate, falling two-tenths of percent to 4.1 in May.

Elsewhere, Brown County’s jobless rate in May stood at 3.9 percent; Jackson, 4.8 percent; Jefferson, 5.1 percent; Leavenworth, 5.3 percent; Marshall, 3.2 percent and Pottawatomie at 4 percent.   All the figures are up from April, but down from May 2013.

The report says Kansas jobless rate remained unchanged at 4.8 percent in May while the state saw record employment.

The state Department of Labor said nearly 1.43 million Kansas residents were employed in May, up from both April of this year and May 2013.

The agency also said last month’s unemployment rate was significantly better than the 5.6 percent seen in May 2013.
