(KNZA)--The Centralia Fire Department has received state approval for a nearly $2,000 Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant.
The grants, made available through the Federal Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act, will total $272,000 statewide this year. Funding for the grants comes from the USDA Forest Service. The agency then awards a grant to the Kansas Forest Service, which administers the program and approves the grants to local fire departments.
Centralia Fire Chief Jerry Feldkamp says their grant will be used to purchase a floating pump to utilize the water supply from ponds and streams in rural areas. Feldkamp says they will also purchase a light bar for one of their grass trucks, and some flash lights to improve safety at fires and other emergencies.
