(KLZA)-- The Mound City School Board has selected Johnson Controls, a national company with officers in Kansas City, to work with the District on a number of proposed building improvements.
Plans are for new air conditioning, an elevator, security systems and a multi-purpose room with a stage.
The fee for the company will be approximately 6-percent of the total cost of the project.
Dave Villines will serve as Project Manager for the company. He has been working with the District as a consultant. Superintendent Eaton explained hiring a construction manager cuts out ad-ons. The company subs out the work and if there are overages, it comes out of the construction managers fee.
Before any projects begin, Mound City School District Patrons will vote on whether or not to move forward. The election will be August 5th. If approved the levy would increase 42-cents but would still put the Mound City School District in the lowest 15 districts among the 77 school districts in Northwest Missouri.
While Mound City schools are providing a quality education for students, part of the facility is now 100 years old and improvements are needed, including handicapped accessibility, some safety and security measures not currently in place and air conditioning which will improve the learning environment.
While efforts to pass bond issues have failed in the past, Superintendent Eaton feels there is a good chance this plan will be approved by voters.
The Board also discussed a lighting project proposal when they met Monday evening. There have not been any lighting improvements since 2000 at the school in Mound City. It is likely the lighting project could be included with other improvements proposed.
