(KTNC)--People driving through the state of Missouri this weekend won’t have as many construction headaches to contend with.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says it is suspending most highway construction and maintenance work this weekend to accommodate the increased traffic expected for the 4th of July holiday.
Work will stop at noon Thursday and resume after the morning rush on Monday. Some lane and bridge closures will remain in place.
And while most of the roadwork is stopping for the holiday, MoDOT officials caution drivers to remain alert and drive smart to ensure safe travels. That means paying attention, buckling seat belts, obeying the speed limit, and not drinking and driving.
Nineteen people were killed and 83 were seriously injured in traffic crashes in Missouri over the Independence Day holiday last year. Thirteen of those fatalities and 11 of those seriously injured involved an impaired driver.
