(KAIR)--Officials in Buchanan County have officially taken over the ambulance service once run by Heartland Health.
According to KQ2-TV, the fourteen month long process was completed Tuesday.
The new governing body for the service, Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority, or REMSA, started operations Tuesday morning at midnight. They will continue to use Heartland's garage as a base of operations, but will need to have its own garage by next March.
County leaders say they are excited about the transition, and vow to deliver the same excellent service that residents had come to expect from Heartland.
Funding for the service will be provided through a quarter cent sales tax passed by voters last fall. Approximately $2.8 million is expected to be generated from the tax.
Heartland announced last fall that they were ending the service because they felt as though they were losing too much money with it.
