(KAIR)--Officers with the Atchison Police Department were called to the scene of a residence located in the 1500 block of North Third Street Friday night just after 9:30 after it had been reported that a burglary had just occurred. However, further investigation allowed them to take a suspect into custody that had nothing to do with the alleged burglary.
Police Chief Mike Wilson says that while they were in the area, they were actually led to a point in the 1500 block of North Seventh Street, where contact was made with 44-year-old John Lewis of Atchison. Lewis ran from the scene, but was apprehended soon after.
Wilson who adds that officers found what appeared to be drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine in a vehicle that Lewis had been in shortly before police arrived on the scene.
Lewis is facing charges of obstructing the legal process for attempting to flee police, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of methamphetamine. He remains in the Atchison County Jail.
Wilson says the suspect in the burglary case was not apprehended, but officials have made an identification. The case has been sent to the County Attorney for possible filing of formal charges.
