Mill Levy Increase Proposed For Doniphan Co
07/25/2014

(KNZA)--Removal of the mortgage registration fee by the Kansas Legislature is cited as the reason for a proposed mill levy increase in the 2015 Doniphan County budget.
County Commissioners this week were presented with the draft budget for their review, with the document including the proposed increase of 4.784, meaning the mill levy would climb from 43.923 mills to 48.707 mills.
That would provide the county with a total tax amount of $511, 718.56.
Proposed expenditures included in the budget stand at $5,209,770.
County Clerk Peggy Franken says the proposed increase is made necessary due to a near 1 mill loss in revenues due to the controversial decision of the State Legislature to do away with the mortgage registration fee. Also playing into the loss is the removal of vehicle inspection fees from the county's general fund. Instead, those monies are to be placed in a separate fund designated for law enforcement use only.
Doniphan County has, over the past several years, held the mill levy rate steady, despite an increase in expenditures to the Road and Bridge fund, meaning a depletion in the cash reserve in the general fund.
Commissioners will continue to review the budget, with changes still possible, prior to publication and finalization.
