(MSC News)--Beware of that postcard in the mailbox making promises that appear to good to be true.
That word from State Treasurer Ron Estes who's warning Kansans of suspicious postcards labeled as “Unclaimed Property Notification.”
Estes says they should simply be ignored, as they are not being sent by any state agency, including the Unclaimed Property Division of his department.
According to Estes, state residents have been receiving a series of postcards, varying in color, that instruct the recipient to call a toll-free number and enter personal identification information. A recorded message then directs the caller to search a website for unclaimed property.
Estes says the state will never request personal information in the manner instructed by the postcards and does not require a fee for the return of unclaimed property.
The postcards are postmarked in Denver and formal complaints regarding the solicitation have been made by recipients.
Kansans who believe they may have unclaimed property available to claim at the State Treasurer’s Office should search the state’s official website, www.kansascash.com, or call the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-800-432-0386.
