(KNZA)--The Denison City Council, during a special meeting Monday evening, accepted the resignation of Mayor Audrey Oliverius who faced a voter recall August 5th.
The Topeka Capital Journal reports Council President Bruce Sweany was sworn in as acting mayor.
Oliverius submitted a letter of resignation last week. A recall petition was submitted May 12th, alleging that Oliverius violated the Kansas Open Meetings Act by calling an executive session on March 10th, during which a vote was taken to fill a vacant council seat.
Jackson County Clerk Kathy Mick says voters will still vote on the recall Aug. 5 because advance voting has already started.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the council appointed Vickie Wold and Ed Hindman to fill two vacant council seats. In addition, the council hired Yvonne Hamer as the city clerk. Hamer has served as city clerk in the past.
