(KAIR)--Area bank officials are warning customers to be on alert for what appears to be a credit card scam being reported in the local region..
The scam starts when a customer receives a call from a recorded voice, telling them that their card has been deactivated, and to have it reactivated, the customer has to provide the sixteen digit card number, the pin number, and in some cases, their social security number.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says such scams can be very hard to investigate, even if those receiving the call report it to law enforcement officials. He says that in most cases, the calls are originating from outside the local area, possibly from a foreign country.
Wilson says the best bet if receiving such a call is to immediately hang up, as legitimate financial institutions will never use such tactics.
Bank customers in both Atchison and Brown County have made numerous reports of the scam attempt in recent days.
