(KTNC)--A man whose body was found near railroad tracks in southern Holt County has been identified.
Sheriff Scott Wedlock says 59-year-old Shawn Sumpter of Superior, Nebraska, likely died after falling from a train that was traveling through the county. Burlington Northern Santa Fe employees found Sumpter’s body Wednesday afternoon.
Wedlock says an autopsy determined Sumpter died of blunt force trauma, injuries that are consistent with falling from a train.
Foul play is not suspected in the death, which Sheriff Wedlock calls an “unfortunate accident.” Wedlock says Sumpter was likely a transient who was on a railcar illegally when he fell off the moving train.
Authorities don’t know exactly when the accident occurred, but Wedlock says Sumpter may have died 12-to-16 hours before his body was discovered.
