(KLZA)-- Following passage of a nearly $2.9-million bond issue by Mound City School District patrons on Tuesday, Superintendent Ken Eaton said he was proud of the Mound City community and the support they showed for providing a quality education.
In addition to air conditioning the entire school, improving security, efficiency and making the school more friendly for those with special needs, a 100-foot by 100-foot multipurpose room to be constructed on the northeast corner of the building will be a major improvement. Eaton says if the budget numbers work out a stage will be added to the facility to allow for graduation, concerts, music programs and art shows to be held there. Extra-curricular activities will also be held in the facility and it will be available for district patrons to use for reunions.
A project manager is in place. Superintendent Eaton hopes to have the project underway by the end of this calendar year and finished by Christmas 2015. While there will be some disruptions during the school year, Eaton feels it will be worth it to get started as soon as possible. The first thing that will need to be done is repair work on a retaining wall that currently has part of the playground and parking lot shut down.
The Mound City School Board met in special session Wednesday morning. Elementary Special Education teacher Lexi Hecht submitted her resignation after she received a chance to take a similar position at Fairfax, where she lives. The Board voted to allow her out of her contract if they could find a suitable replacement, and for a 10-percent contract penalty amounting to $3,090.
Following an executive session the Board voted to hire Pam Joy of Falls City as the new Elementary Special Education teacher.
