(KAIR)--Construction on improvements at the Atchison Water Treatment Plant are progressing, but officials have determined that additional concrete testing is needed at the facility.
City Project Manager Mike Matthews came before City Commissioners during a recent meeting to request an additional $15,000 to conduct the needed testing. He explained to Commissioners that the current funding was just short, and the additional money should be just enough to finish the various concrete projects at the plant.
City Manager Trey Cocking says that when concrete testing on a job as big as the one at the plant, it can be hard to pinpoint an exact price for that testing. A lot of factors can weigh into the cost such as how many pours there are, the weather, and how much can be done in one day. He adds that when this job was started, the city did not want to just write a blank check for the testing. It was decided to just add a cap the funding with an option to request more money from the Commission if it was needed.
Cocking says construction on the facility's storage tank should be complete next month. The new ozone filtration system will take a bit longer, but Cocking is hopeful that it will be ready by April or May of next year.
Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the additional funding. Mayor Dave Butler was not present at the meeting.
