Brown County Courthouse

(KNZA)--The Brown County Commission has adopted a 2015 county budget of $9.2 million, half of which will be raised from property taxes.

The action followed a hearing on Monday drawing no public comment.

The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 37.292 mills, up .002 over this year's levy.

Hiawatha CPA Jim Scherer, who prepared the budget, said the county is blessed that it's assessed valuation continues to raise--climbing from $125 million in 2013 to $136 million for 2015. That means a mill will raise more tax dollars.

In addition, Scherer noted that the county’s outstanding indebtedness continues to falls--dropping around $800,000 since 2012.
