(KNZA)-- Return the statues to the Hiawatha High School and put them on display.
That was the consensus of the majority of the USD 415 Board of Education during their meeting Monday evening, pertaining to two Native American statues, dating back nearly a century.
But exactly where the statues donated to the school in 1918 and 1921 should be placed hasn’t been determined.
School Board member John Wright, along with Hiawatha graduate Jay Brock, took the statues when the mascot changed in 2001 and had them restored by a local artist. Both statues had been vandalized.
The board agreed the statues should be displayed in cases to protect them.
Wright said he had been contacted by the Hiawatha Alumni Association, who said they were willing to donate $1,000 toward cases, and he felt other donations could also be raised.
