Hiawatha Armory Plans Open House
09/12/2014

(KNZA)--The underway makeover of the Hiawatha Armory is apparent to passersby, and while that's not the focus of an open house planned at the location Saturday, visitors will still have a chance to see the preliminary remodel of the structure.

Sergeant 1st Class Kevin Newell says the open house is intended as a way for the local Guard members to meet the public. “We haven't had an open house in a while. We'd just like everybody to come in a visit with us and see what we do and just remind them you do have a local Army National Guard here in town.”

Newell says Saturday will allow the general public, including potential National Guard recruits, to have an opportunity to see first hand the latest tools being used by the Guard. “We're going to have a firearms training system set up downstairs to where groups of three or four can go down in teams and work on the simulator where we can do mock squad attacks, ambushes, simulate soldier training as best we can.”

Newell says that's only one example of what will be on display during Saturday's open house, at the Hiawatha Armory, located at 108 North 1st Street.

Running from 10:00 until 2:00, Newell says guests are invited to meet with soldiers, the local recruiter, and enjoy hot dogs while viewing the Guard's equipment.
