(KTNC)--The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors approved its budget for the next year during last week’s meeting in Tecumseh.
While the total budget of $6.1 million is more than last year’s $5 million budget, the property tax request is the same as last year – just over $2.4 million. With no increase in the tax request, the property tax levy dropped from 4.37 cents to 3.88 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
The NRD anticipates the additional revenue needed for the budget will come from sources including state and federal grants and other funds. NRD officials say they have a large cash balance available for land rights required for the Duck Creek Watershed project.
That project is located near Peru and includes flood control and public recreation components.
Other major projects for the NRD this year include plans to upgrade a structure on the Upper Big Nemaha near Adams to high-hazard standards, and repairs and major maintenance projects on several watershed structures.
Following a short closed session, the board approved a recommendation of the Executive Committee regarding land rights for the Duck Creek project. NRD Manager Bob Hilske told the board he hopes a construction contract for the dam could be approved by the end of the year.
