(KNZA)--Brown County Commissioners have joined their counterparts in neighboring Doniphan County in opposing the aquisition and construction of a proposed reservoir and aqueduct system that would divert water from the Missouri River to support agriculture in western Kansas.
The Brown County Commission on Tuesday adopted a resolution formally opposing the project but supporting a 50-year vision for Kansas water.
The resolution states the proposed project would result in the loss of prime Brown County agricultural land from the tax roles, and have a negative impact on landowners and farmers. In addition, the resolution states an aqueduct that runs through the county will negatively impact exisiting roads, bridges and other structures.
A study is currently underway to update the one completed in 1982 that proposed building a 360-mile aqueduct from near White Cloud to a location near Utica in western Kansas. The cost at that time was pegged at $4.4 billion to build the system, which would include pumping stations and collection reservoirs.
