(Nebraska News Network)-- As Nebraskans head to the grocery store on thing is certain - prices keep going up and up. The Consumer Price Index for the month of September for all merchandise rose one-tenth of 1% and up 1.7% compared to a year ago. U-S Department of Agriculture Food Price Economist Anne Marie Kuhns says the food inflationary rate was much higher.
Kuhns says beef and veal prices increased are also increasing going up 2% in September, up 17.8 percent from one year ago.
She says beef production is at the lowest level since 1951 and is expected to remain low. Pork prices are up more than 11% from a year ago but Kuhn says producers are increasing inventories and pork prices should start to drop.
Kuhns says cattle inventories remain very low and producers are not increasing herds at this time. In the past year pork prices have increased more than 11%. Kuhns says the good news is that pork producers are increasing herds and prices at the grocery store should soon drop.
